This clay is probably more abundant than either illite or smectite. Interstratified chlorite-smectite is associated with alteration of basic igneous rock or rock fragments in sandstone. Regularly interstratified chlorite-smectite and chlorite-vermiculite with 50% of each component are both known as corrensite.

These clays probably formed from volcanic material, montmorillonite or chlorite, rather than from the degradation of micas and illites. The most common type of mixed-layer clay is composed of expanded, waterbearing layers and contracted, non-water-bearing layers (i.e., illite-montmorillonite, chlorite-vermiculite, chloritc-montmorillonite).

2022-5-23 Chlorite is the second-most common class of clay minerals on the Martian surface and has been found to coexist with illite in some regions. Although previous studies have paid much attention to the formation of this assemblage, the post-depositional evolution cannot be neglected because the aqueous activities may alter the mineral assemblage and distribution.
